Dr. Thomas E. Kendig, 89, of Sarasota died Aug. 31, 2009. 

Services will be private. 

Dr. Thomas E. Kendig was born in Columbia, Pa., on June 28, 1920. He attended the public schools and graduated from Columbia High School. He was awarded his Bachelor of Science, Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees by The Pennsylvania State University. 

Dr. Kendig served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and in his profession as classroom teacher of chemistry and physics, high school principal and chief school administrator for 20 years before entering the Pennsylvania Department of Education in 1967 where he was director, Bureau of Educational Quality Assessment. 

He retired from Bensalem Township School District in Pennsylvania in 1982, at which time he relocated to Sarasota. 

Dr. Kendig was a member of the American Association of School Administrators and Phi Delta Kappa. Since his retirement, he has been a member of Pine Shores Presbyterian Church in Sarasota. He is the last of his family.
