Agnes Caroline Nolen, 92, of 442 Walnut Bottom Road, Carlisle, died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Thornwald Home, Carlisle.

Born June 14, 1911, in Clearfield County, she was a daughter of the late James A. and Lottie Owens Nolen. 

A 1926 graduate of Carlisle High School and a 1930 graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Miss Nolen received her master's degree from the University of Pennsylvania and did graduate work at Penn State University, Western Maryland, William and Mary, Tufts University in Boston, Mass., and the American Academy in Rome. 

She was a school teacher for 43 years, teaching Latin, English, History and French at Carlisle High School for 37 years before retiring in 1973. 

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Carlisle, where she was the organist for 40 years. Also, she was a member of University Women; the Musical Arts Club; Civic Club; Hamilton Library & Historical Society; and the Retired Teachers' Association. 

Miss Nolen is survived by a nephew, James H. Nolen of Del City, Okla.; a great-niece, Jamie Nolen McElyea; and a great-nephew, Jon Nolen. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Nolen; and a sister, Veretta Nolen. 

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, 630 S. Hanover St., Carlisle, with Rev. Sharonn D. Halderman officiating. Burial will be in Ashland Cemetery, Carlisle. 

Friends may call from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
