Warren A. von Schleicher (1980)

Mrs. Henry, our German teacher, was deeply devoted to teaching language proficiency and revealing the beauty and complexity of culture and the arts. During her battle with cancer, she continued to teach and let no one know of her private physical struggle. At the end, after missing only a few days, our class was told that Mrs. Henry died. When a substitute German teacher arrived, we turned our desks around and put our backs to her (Mrs. Apsche), not as an insult (though unfortunately she took it that way) but as an expression of our loss for Mrs. Henry.

Dorothy Henry was a scholar and graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. She worked in the corporate world translating German before starting a second career as a teacher. One day, while giving us a written quiz, she played an opera by Richard Wagner. Mrs. Henry's small gesture changed my life.  She introduced me to opera, one of the greatest gifts anyone ever gave me. And she never even knew it. A great teacher and a beautiful person, Mrs. Henry is much missed. No memorial was posted for her on this site, so I wanted to provide one. I hope a rose now appears by her name.

Warren (class of 1980)
