Florence G. Gerhart (Muller) - Class Of 1929

Florence G. Gerhart (Muller)

Deceased Name: FLORENCE GERHART MULLER, 82, BENSALEM TRACK STAR, COACH, CIVIC LEADER

Florence Gerhart Muller, 82, an honored educator who dedicated her life to serving the Bensalem community, died Friday at Frankford Hospital, Torresdale Campus.

An outstanding student-athlete at Bensalem High School, from which she graduated in 1929, Mrs. Muller returned to her alma mater at age 44 to become a teacher and coach.

Her achievements were considerable. As girls' varsity basketball coach for 18 years, she headed teams that dominated the Lower Bucks County League from 1957 through 1961. She was also the Bensalem Middle School coach for hockey, basketball, gymnastics and track, and coached the girls' varsity track team for 18 years, hosting a mid-Atlantic track meet won by her team.

She was inducted into the Bensalem High School Hall of Fame in 1969 for her outstanding performances as a track star during high school. In 1987, for her teaching accomplishments, she was inducted again - becoming the only person ever named to the Hall of Fame twice for different achievements, her family said.

Mrs. Muller was also a distinguished square dance caller, known for teaching square dance classes and for founding the Bensalem Belles and Beaux Square Dance Club.

A graduate of Temple University, Mrs. Muller received the Citizen of the Year award from the Lower Bucks Lions Club in 1962.

As an active leader of the Bensalem High School Alumni Association, Mrs. Muller worked to make sure that association scholarships were presented at each commencement. For her efforts, the Florence Gerhart Muller Alumni Scholarship Award was instituted in her honor last June.

"She was always doing for others," said her brother, Paul Gerhart.

Mrs. Muller is survived by her daughter, Diane Sills; brothers, Paul Gerhart and Eugene Gerhart, and two grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Tomlinson Funeral Home, 2207 Bristol Pike, Bensalem. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Tomlinson.
