Helen Beegle Kain, 81, of West Chester, a World War II veteran and former owner of the Frame Shoppe in Wilmington, died Wednesday at home of complications from a stroke.

 

Mrs. Kain graduated from Bensalem High School. During World War II, she enlisted in the Navy Waves (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). She served in Washington for a year and then served at an air base in Maui, Hawaii, where she met Chief Petty Officer John J. Kain. The couple married in 1945. They returned twice to Hawaii for vacations and visited the remains of the Quonset-hut chapel where their wedding ceremony had taken place.

 

While raising her family, Mrs. Kain sewed clothes for her daughters, and she later crocheted afghans for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and decorating, her daughter Diane Way said, and was a trend-setter in her use of color and style.

 

For more than 14 years, until the late 1980s, Mrs. Kain and another daughter, Eileen Buoni, owned an art gallery and frame store in Wilmington.

 

In addition to her husband and daughters, Mrs. Kain is survived by sons Larry and James; daughter Joanne Lamorandier; a sister; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

 

A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church, 233 W. Gay St., West Chester. Friends may call at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, West Chester
