Bensalem Township High School

Samuel K. Faust

Alumni Scholarship Award

Mr. Faust was a graduate of West Chester State Teachers College and the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1923 Mr. Faust came to Bensalem as superintendent, being charged by the school board to reorganize the elementary schools and to develop a high school.  At the time, Bensalem had no high school; therefore, Bensalem students of high school age ere set to other schools in nearby towns—Bristol, Langhorne, Jenkintown, and Frankford.  Mr. Faust died in 1940.

Mr. Faust won the respect of teachers and students alike for his thoroughness and fairness.  The Samuel K. Faust Elementary School was built in the Nottingham section of Bensalem in 1956 and named in his honor.

I went to school there from 1959 -1966 at Samuel K. Faust Elementary School. There were many great teachers there that I remember. Many of them I still hold fondness in my heart. I remember the day that President Kennedy was shot and how everyone especially the woman teachers were crying. The playground to me back then was huge and the greatest thing. We played everything like kickball, dodgeball and wiffleball. We were allowed to build in the winter a huge snow fort out of the huge piles of snow pushed from the plow to the far corner in the playground. We had some science activities in the woods with the teacher. Lunch was great, huge cookies, brownies and a lot of food, plenty of milk. It was a swell time of going to school everyday. Very fond memories there!   We burned off all those lunch time calories because we were very active at recess on that playground. Today I heard some schools do not allow dodgeball or kickball. Not much physical fun like the days I grew up!
