Marguerite E. Kroekel
February 18, 1921 - September 1, 2024
Marguerite E. Kroekel, of Philadelphia, passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2024. She was 103 years old. "Margy" as she was known by her family and friends, was born in Philadelphia on February 18, 1921 to the late Carl Rudolph and Wilhelmine L. (ne Angermann) Kroekel. She was predeceased by her sisters: Gertude Baker (the late Robert) and Ruth Kochalka (the late John). Margy is survived by and will be fondly remembered by her niece, nephews, and extended family, as well as the many people who knew her as a teacher and inspirational friend.
Margy earned a bachelor's degree from Moore College of Art and Design, followed by post-graduate study at Cornell University and the Tyler School of Art. After teaching a few years for the Bensalem School District, she moved to the Rockledge School, where she taught art to grades K-9, and physical education. She coached the school newspaper and girls' basketball, as well as drama productions. When that school closed she became itinerant art education coordinator for the Abington Township School District. Margy taught and expressed her own creativity in a wide variety of ways, ranging from painting in every medium, through woodcuts and engraving, copper enameling, ceramics, macrame, knitting, sewing, and weaving. She was also a musician, playing violin in the Old York Road Symphony, and piano for church functions. She was a life-long member of the church choir, and active in all aspects of the church, including many years of service as a Sunday School teacher and director of the Vacation Bible School. Even after she was physically no longer able to leave her home, she continued to serve as a tutor for the church's literacy program.
