Albert C. Sowers

1920 - 2014

Dr. Albert C. Sowers passed away on January 29, 2014 with his family at his side. He was born in Conshohocken, PA on July 10, 1920 to Mahlon Sowers and Gertrude Willhide Sowers. Dr. Sowers graduated from Conshohocken High School and received his undergraduate degree from West Chester State Teachers College in Pennsylvania. He enlisted in the US Army in June 1942, serving as an MP in the Persian Gulf Command, Hawaii, New Zealand and Australia, receiving an honorable discharge in 1945. Utilizing the GI Bill, Dr. Sowers then received a Masters degree from the University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate in Psychology from West Virginia University. In June 1947, Dr. Sowers married Anne Gyllenhaal. The Sowers family lived in Wellsboro, Carlisle and Newtown, PA prior to retiring at their beloved Cape May Point, NJ home where Albert was an avid fisherman. Dr. Sowers was a clinical psychologist who served as the chief psychologist in Bucks and Tioga County School Districts in Pennsylvania as well as the Vineland, NJ School District. Dr. Sowers was a pioneer in Special Education programs in Pennsylvania. During his retirement years, Dr. Sowers served as a volunteer firefighter for the Cape May Point Fire Department and was a member of the Masonic Order and the Lions and Rotary Clubs. He is survived by his wife, Anne of Wilmington, DE, daughters Barbara Smith (Chip) of North Port, FL, Jacqueline Gallagher (Mike) of Wilmington, DE, Jennifer Mineart (Alvin) of Ellicot City, MD, sons Albert Clay (Shelly) of Blue Bell, PA and Jeffrey of North Wales, PA., 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held this summer in Cape May Point, NJ. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Cape May Point Volunteer Fire Company.
