Reverend Robert J Meyer Obituary
Rev. Robert J. Meyer, 79, of Millerstown, was called home on March 22, 2026.
Robert was born Feb. 24, 1947 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Victor and Wilma Meyer, the
second of six children. His journey with Christ began at the age of 5, when he accepted the
Lord during Sunday School at East Baptist Church in Philadelphia.
In 1965, Robert enrolled at Philadelphia College of Bible, and it was during that time he met
Rachel Hoisington, a teacher from Adrian, Michigan, who had begun attending his home church
in Bensalem, PA. They married in August of 1969, and Robert graduated with a degree in Bible
& Christian Education in 1970, later completing a masters degree in teaching from Trenton State
University. He was ordained in 1977 at Calvary Baptist Church in Midland, Michigan.
Robert spent time in Michigan, Indiana, and Pennsylvania, serving as a pastor, educator, and
school principal, but he found his true calling in 1989 when he was installed as pastor at Central
Baptist Church in Millerstown, a position he would hold until he retired in 2011 as the church’s
longest-serving pastor. After retirement, he continued on as a loyal member of the Central
Baptist congregation, lovingly known as ‘Pastor Bob’ and easy to find in his specially-reserved
pew in the back row.
Music was a big part of Robert’s life and ministry. He directed the choir at Central Baptist
Church, hand-picked hymns for each service, and frequently sang duets with Rachel, who
played piano and organ for the church. He played baritone and tuba in the Greenwood
Community Band, first performing with the group on his very first night in Millerstown. After
retirement, he sang with the Bunkertown Men’s Chorus.
A devoted resident of Millerstown, Robert was active in the community and served on the Board
of Directors of Millerstown Community Success, Inc. He also played a major role in the
Mid-Atlantic Conservative Baptist Association, serving as MACBA representative on the CBA
National Board and as vice president of MACBA's East-Central region.
Beyond his ministry and music, Robert enjoyed hobbies such as fishing, softball, and travel. He
loved to read, particularly fantasy and mystery novels, and loved game shows, video games,
and newspaper comics. A proud Philadelphian, he was a fan of all Philly sports teams,
especially the Phillies and Eagles, loved Penn State football, and always kept tabs on local high
school sports - rooting on any students in his congregation.
Robert is survived by Rachel, his wife of 57 years, two sons, Matthew and Nathan, and a
grandson, Daniel.
Services will be held Saturday, March 28 at Central Baptist Church, Millerstown with a viewing from 9 AM until the funeral
service at 11 AM. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery, Millerstown
