Richard A. Effrig

Richard Alan Effrig

August 5, 1954 - October 14, 2021

Richard Alan Effrig, 67, passed away on Thursday, October 14, 2021. Preceded in death by his beloved grandparents Harry and Anne Grogan (Mother’s side) and Albert and Emma Effrig (Father’s side), great grandparents Thomas and Margaret Flannery, wife’s parents Harry and Elsie Thorpe. He is survived by his loving wife Nancy, son Alan and his wife Dr. Jessica Effrig, his granddaughter Lucy (Effrig), his mother Doris, his sister Carol and her husband Davd Shea, and their children Ryan and Kyle.

Rick loved life with enthusiasm and zest. He was kind, loving, affectionate, and very caring. He had a beautiful smile and a twinkle in his blue eyes. He was willing to help anyone, and could do anything he put his mind to. He loved his son Alan dearly and helped him onward to college, and, after first married, his wife, Nancy to nursing school. He immensely enjoyed his years at the Budd Company, following his father Bill to the skilled trade as a tool and die maker. A fond memory Nancy has is how he pointed out a train (railcar) he worked on. It bore the number of one he assembled as his wife Nancy boarded on Amtrak.

Rick had many hobbies and enjoyed a variety of different things which included photography, music, piano, and playing the clarinet. He greatly enjoyed his teen years in the marching band at Bensalem High School. He was very proud of his private pilot’s license, which he had for 15 years. He owned and partnered several airplanes, and he refurbished one with his friend and partner George, which still flies to this day. There are many fond memories of his years at Warrington Airport, flying around the Statue of Liberty and up the Hudson River, flights to Ocean City, NJ, and fly-in breakfasts. He took Oshkosh trips with his friend Ray, where he once met Pappy Boyington, a combat pilot from World War II.

Rick was an early TV star from his two weeks on Romper Room in the fifties. He enjoyed a long time love of radio control model planes and helicopters, and is a member of the Washington Crossing Model Club. He built from scratch everything he flew. He built and designed furniture, and remodeled the upstairs of their first home with the help of his father Bill.

Rick enjoyed fishing and boating with his Pop Pop Harry at Long Beach Island, NJ as a little boy, and later with his father Bill. He also enjoyed sailing for a while and in the previous decade, he and his wife enjoyed their trips to the Outer Banks, NC.

He raised tropical fish as a young man and when his son Alan was young, built and enjoyed model railroad layouts.

He participated in Road Rallies in Bucks County with his sister Carol. He was an avid motorcycle rider as a young man.

Two of his most recent joys, while he was dealing with his health issues, was his love of cooking and baking from scratch. Nancy cherishes him baking her Gingerbread cookies and his joy in watching Lucy (grandchild) grow!

He is deeply missed by all who knew him.

A memorial gathering will be held on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 from 5-6 pm at Kirk and Nice Suburban Chapel, 333 W. County Line Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006. A memorial service will follow in the funeral home at 6 pm.
