| Robert F. Dietz, friend to all
By MILT KRUGMAN COURIER TIMES It was love at first sight when Judy Dietz first saw "Bobby D," at a Bensalem restaurant. Robert F. Dietz excelled in baseball, basketball and football when he attended Bensalem High School, quarterbacking the team that won the Lower Bucks County championship in his senior year. He graduated in 1978. "I knew the minute I laid eyes on him that he was the man for me," she said. "Just his demeanor got me. He knew everybody there; his best friend's wife worked there. He was talking with everybody, and I could not stop staring at him. Wherever he stood there was a crowd of people, and then the barmaid gave me a drink from Bobby." "I went over and thanked him, we talked, and that was more than 14 years ago," she said. Mr. Dietz, a resident of Middletown for more than six years, died Nov. 7 of a heart attack. He was 48. Born in Philadelphia, he was employed as a field maintenance utility man for 21 years with the Bucks County Joint Municipal Authority. "Bobby was pretty proud of his athletic achievements, but you know what, I didn't learn any of it from him. It was all from his friends and family," his wife said. "He was very humble." His wife has two children from a previous marriage, and she and Mr. Dietz have a child together. "But they all are his girls," she said. "He embraced my children like his own. "Everywhere we went you could hear, "Hey, Bobby D' or "Come on over here, Bobby D,' " she said. "When we were dating and we went on a date on the Spirit of Philadelphia cruise ship, we got up for a slow dance, and what do we hear but, "Bobby D,' " she recalled. "I said to him, "I can't even take you off land, and somebody still knows you.' " Milt Krugman can be reached at 215-322-9702 or mkrugman@phillyBurbs.com. |
